Diabetes

“A 2021 report published in the Canadian Family Physician on Diabetes prevalence and complication rates In individual First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout region of Ontario covered 30 remote communities served by the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority. The report stated that :

  • First Nations people in Canada have a prevalence of diabetes that is twice that of the general population
  • About 1 in 8 persons has diabetes and, in any given year, 1 in every 100 residents will develop diabetes.
  • Diabetes complications were common, affecting about 1 in 6 patients over 5 years

The Government of Canada website says “ Type 2 diabetes is a health concern among Canada’s First Nations and Inuit. First Nations on reserve have a rate of diabetes three to five times higher than that of other Canadians. Rates of diabetes among the Inuit are expected to rise significantly in the future given that risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and unhealthy eating patterns are high.
